With America’s continuous and unrelenting racial tension, Hulu’s new dramedy, Woke, feels more prevalent than ever. New Girl’s Lamorne Morris plays Keef Knight, a young, Black cartoonist of a popular news strip called “Toast and Butter.” Keef is living his best life, he has a great girlfriend, fun roommates, and is about to sign a major deal to take “Toast and Butter” to the next level. Everything is going totally fine! Until Keef is accosted by the police while hanging up posters. Police officers swarm him with guns ready to fire, they throw him to the ground but quickly leave when they realize they got the wrong guy. After that...Keef is woke and he can’t go back.
For those of you who don’t know, when someone is “woke” it means they are aware of social and racial injustices that happen in everyday life. And trust me...once you are woke, you can’t unsee everything. It’s as if you’re realizing everything you once knew has changed and is pretty problematic. That’s exactly what Keef is feeling now. He has to navigate through life after becoming woke and it’s a bumpy road.
If you’re not watching Woke….then you need to start. No I mean it, right now! This show is funny, smart, and completely relatable. Lamorne Morris plays Keef with hilarity and heart, you root for him and worry about him all within the same scene. And the relationship between him and his roommates (played by T. Murph and Blake Anderson) help to balance out the story. Getting their perspectives and comedic timing is always a great addition to each scene.
Woke feels and is relevant. It can give audiences new perspectives on what that awakening into awareness looks like. You’ll be obsessed with this show before the first episode even ends.
You can stream Woke on Hulu now.
