Nick Brewer is a sweet family man, a great physical therapist, and wonderful son. So who would want to kidnap and hurt him? His family and friends have the same question when an internet video goes viral of him holding a sign saying he’ll die at 5 million views. Now his family must race against the clock to find him and figure out who has done this. If you’re looking for something that fills the void of Black Mirror, Clickbait is the show for you. It’s a quick binge and once you start, trust me you won’t want to stop. There were plenty of twists and turns, every time I thought I had cracked the case something new would happen. I hope your friends haven’t given you spoilers yet because this is a show that you won’t want to miss! Clickbait is available to stream on Netflix now.
Kung Fu
The CW’s reboot of the 70s TV show, Kung Fu, follows Nicky Shen. Nicky heads China thinking she was going on a fun retreat but actually it turns out to be a matchmaking getaway coordinated by her mom, Nicky decides to ditch the retreat and ends up at a monastery learning the art of Kung Fu. One night her monastery gets attacked by a mysterious person and this leads Nicky to return home. Three years later, Nicky returns to realize her time with the monastery may not be over just yet. Besides the fact that this Kung Fu show actually having Chinese actors (unlike the original, yay representation!), this show is fun, exciting, and timely. They cover current issues within the Asian community and being a person of color as a whole. The cast is electric and every episode is better than the last. Kung Fu will be coming back for a second season on the CW and the first season is available to stream now on HBO Max.
Ted Lasso
I’m sure you’ve heard the name “Ted Lasso” plenty of times over the past two years and over the past week since it brought home 7 Emmys. SNL alum, Jason Sudeikis, stars as Ted Lasso. In the show, Ted is an American football coach who is recruited to head to London to coach an English football team (soccer for us Americans). Between the team owner, the loyal fans, and the football players, Ted realizes he has more on his plate than he originally expected. While Ted Lasso is about...well...Ted Lasso, the ensemble cast really solidifies why this show is worth watching. The writing as well is stunning, every episode makes you feel like you’re friends with these characters and the way they write about anxiety and mental health is so important and so well done. You can start streaming Ted Lasso on Apple TV+ now.
Cruel Summer
Pretty Little Liars meets How to Get Away With Murder in Freeform’s latest summer hit show, Cruel Summer. A small Texas town is struck with terror when a popular teen by the name of Kate Wallis is abducted. Around the same time a nerdy teen in the same grade named Jeanette Turner starts to gain the same popularity Kate had once had. Feeling on top of the world, Jeanette’s life is turned upside down when Kate comes home. Taking place over 3 years, this show weaves an intricate tale following Kate and Jeanette through the rollercoaster they both endured. While sometimes the timeline felt tough to follow, I’ve never seen a show quite like this. I had so many questions and theories throughout watching and every episode gave a little piece of the wild puzzle. Cruel Summer will be coming back for a second season on Freeform and the first season is available for streaming now on Hulu.
Sex Education
Some of the best writing I’ve seen for a teen drama is displayed in the Netflix show, Sex Education. In the town of Moordale in England, Otis takes some tips from his sex therapist mother when he and a classmate start a secret sex therapy clinic out of an abandoned toilet at their school. Sex Education is such a stunning show, the characters, and their development over the last three seasons is brilliant. A show talking openly about the exciting, awkward, and strange parts of having sex while validating and normalizing them is incredible. You’ll find yourself cringing, laughing, and crying all in one episode. Trust me when I say Sex Education is one of the best shows I’ve seen in my life. You can stream seasons 1-3 of Sex Education on Netflix now.
