Time Out!
Are you telling me there’s a reboot of the iconic 80’s sitcom, Saved by the Bell, on NBC’s streaming service, Peacock?...Oh wait. You are...okay great!
Time In!
Yeah that’s right, the iconic, colorful, and cheesy Saved by the Bell is back and now streaming on Peacock. With OG cast members, nods to the original show, and exciting new plotlines, this 2020 version of Saved by the Bell is a breath of fresh air for what feels like a heavy year.
In this 2020 reboot, the Governor of California, Zack Morris, (yes THAT Zack Morris played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar) made some detrimental mistakes to the education budget for the state. His error forced the schools in lower income areas to close down, having those students absorbed into the higher-end schools. Best friends, Daisy and Aisha, are ready to take their new school by storm and their fellow transfer, Devante, is ready to try something new. Then they meet the Bayside kids of their little group, Mac, Jamie, and Lexi. Mac is Zack Morris’ son and carries the entitlement very well. Jamie, OG cast member Jessie Spano’s son, who didn’t necessarily inherit her smarts is a loveable cutie. And Lexi, the coolest girl in school, resident mean girl, and reality TV star about her coming out as Transgender. With some help from A.C. Slater the gym teacher (Mario Lopez) and guidance counselor, Jessie Spano (Elizabeth Berkley), the new 6-some have all the tools they need to succeed and enter themselves into some interesting situations. This reboot has some extra sass and covers modern issues, while poking fun at the original’s wholesome yet unbelievable content.
This show works so well because of the charming cast. The dynamic between the ensemble cast is strong through each scene. Haskiri Velazquez’s Daisy is the brains and the go-getter of the group. Haskiri, plays Daisy in such an endearing way and she’s a great joy to watch. What I also love about the character Daisy is that she is a true anchor to the show. While she is technically “the main character” and has Zack Morris’ famous ability to “time in and out,” not every episode is about her. But she really brings the group together and gives the group some light. Josie Totah’s Lexi is the modern day loveable, mean girl. She brings the laugh, the heart, and some amazing style moments that made me rethink my entire wardrobe. And Mitchell Hoog’s Mac Morris, is a true crack up. He has the spunk and mischievousness that Zack did but he has a fun spin on it. Mitchell is lively and brings so much fun to the Bayside world.
I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed for a season two. I have to be honest, I want this show to premiere on another platform so more people will be able to see this show! If you’re looking for something light, funny, and heart-warming, Saved by the Bell reboot is the show for you. You can stream all episodes Saved by the Bell on Peacock now.
