NBC’s fall lineup of shows is always something to be excited about. Ariana Grande is judging on the new season of The Voice. Dr. Max Goodwin and Dr. Helen Sharpe may actually be together in New Amsterdam. And a huge sinkhole opens up in the middle of Los Angeles (so be careful Angelinos!) in La Brea. Even with all of this on the docket, NBC has room for one more. Ordinary Joe is the newest NBC show about an ordinary guy named Joe (obviously) and the three ways his life could’ve turned out. The show follows Joe in all three lives.
In one life, Joe becomes a doctor, marries his college best friend, and has a child with her. In another, Joe marries the mystery girl he met at graduation and becomes a famous rockstar. And in the third life he follows in his late father’s footsteps and becomes a New York City police officer. While the show may be called Ordinary Joe, the show as well feels ordinary. The different timelines and realities are reminiscent of This Is Us but it doesn’t have as much heart. I know it’s a great show when I develop love and interest in the characters from the first episode, and after two episodes of Ordinary Joe, I don’t have that feeling for anyone.
I am interested in where the show will go but it’s not a must-see watch for me. I think the show could benefit from becoming an anthology series. If they get renewed, I feel like it could be a great show if we were able to follow different people in the next couple of seasons. Following a white guy that lives a pretty privileged life in all 3 scenarios isn’t as interesting or fun as one would think.
You can watch Ordinary Joe, Monday nights after The Voice at 10 pm.
