The Pretty Little Liars spinoff, The Perfectionists, has premiered on Freeform and it is exactly what you would expect. Full of mystery, hot people, and a weird Mona.
Alison DiLaurentis (played by Sasha Pieterse) is a new faculty member a Beacon Heights University (BHU). A school where the students strive only to be the best and do not settle for less. She finds herself running into Mona Vanderwaal (played by Janel Parrish) who has returned from Paris to become to work in the admissions department of BHU. There's a new It-Crew Ava Jalali (The Descendants' Sofia Carson), Dylan Walker, Caitlin Martell-Lewis, and Nolan Hotchkiss. Nolan is running this crew and holding secrets over everyone's heads so they do their bidding for him. And for you Gossip Girl fans, Kelly Rutherford plays Nolan's overbearing and stress-inducing mother (you can see where Nolan gets it from). The Hotchkiss family is still morning the suicide of their daughter and sister, Taylor. Each student is fighting their own battle and shackled by a different secret. It is only a matter of time before it all blows up.
If this show shares anything with Pretty Little Liars it's the fact that these people have secrets that could really be solved but choose to bear the weight and be blackmailed. But, I guess that's what makes shows in the PLL Universe so exciting. The show mirrors Pretty Little Liars...a lot but I guess that's why it's a spinoff. Unfortunately, it is a little too much of a similarity. Even though Alison claims she's leaving her mean girl roots back in Rosewood, she is elbowing her way into the business of all of the college students. I never had a professor that pried so much.
The scene was set and there are a good amount of twists that happen in the first episode alone. What makes me nervous about a premiere episode including so many twists is that they'll give away all the good stuff and the continuing episodes lose the hype. Hopefully, the season keeps momentum and gasps keep on coming. If you're a Pretty Little Liars fan then you will enjoy this show. If you're a first time watcher I think you'll definitely be able to follow along with the new band of characters. There are a lot of mysteries that are yet to be solved but I'm pretty intrigued as to where they'll go.
I would give it a 6/10.
