Okay picture this, you form a band with 3 hot guys but...they’re ghosts.
Hard to picture? Well, Netflix’s new music comedy, Julie and The Phantoms, gives you a full picture. Luke, Alex, Reggie, and Bobby are all in the band “Sunset Curve.” During a band soundcheck in 1995, Luke, Reggie, and Alex leave Bobby at the venue while they venture out in search of hot dogs. Unfortunately for the boys, the hot dogs out of the back of a car were not for eating and the boys died. 25 years later in 2020, Julie recently lost her mom and her will to sing. On the verge of being kicked out of her school music program, three ghosts unexpectedly enter her life and restore her faith in music when they form their new band called “Julie and The Phantoms.” It’s not all easy though. Can you imagine having to explain why the guys you play with appear and disappear?
The show’s lead, Julie, is played by Madison Reyes. She’s adorable and has a powerhouse voice. She brings a sweetness to the role, you just want her to succeed no matter what. And the boys, so cute, played by Owen Joyner, Jeremy Shada, and Charlie Gillespie, are funny and loveable. The fully fleshed out characters and backstories give you an attachment to them before the first episode ends.
The music’s pop-rock sound is enough to get you toe tapping each episode. Each song has a different vibe but together there’s a cohesive album that I can’t stop listening to. The raw talent of the cast makes the show even better, they’re chemistry onstage and behind the camera shows. Not to mention, there are some amazing performances by Cheyenne Jackson, that you won’t want to miss.
Julie and The Phantoms is like an amplified Nickelodeon TV show. Yes you’re watching a kids show but it’s fun, written with heart, and each character is genuinely intriguing to watch. I can’t wait for another season, but until then I’ll be dancing to the soundtrack on Spotify.
You can stream Julie and The Phantoms now on Netflix!
