The Baker & The Beauty...And The Vague Plotline

Monday night ABC dropped their new scripted rom-com TV show, The Baker & The Beauty. The show centers around Daniel Garcia (played by Victor Rasuk), his family owns a bakery in Miami. While on a date for his four year anniversary with his over-zealous, girlfriend Vanessa (Michelle Veintimilla). Whilst giving himself the proposal pep talkin the urinal he runs into Noa Hamilton. Played by Dynasty's Nathalie Kelley, Noa is a mega-celebrity who recently broke up with her cheating actor boyfriend.

After a quick meeting in the bathroom (why she was in the men's room goes unexplained for the whole episode, so don't ask), they return to their separate tables. When Daniel sits down, Vanessa takes the opportunity to gather the attention of the restaurant and propose to Daniel herself. Daniel, unfortunately, turns down the proposal. As he leaves the restaurant, Noa Hamilton offer's him a ride home. That ride home turns into a night of antics with the paparazzi's favorite subject.

The characters are interesting, there's definitely a lot that could be explored there, it's just a matter of if the writers allow us to see what kind of stories they carry through the show. But, there was one character that stood out among the rest...the ex-girlfriend Vanessa was made to seem crazy or extra, when she was truly an interesting character. This woman is gorgeous, owns her own business, and is kind of bad ass in my opinion. The rejected proposal scene was awesome because she came back to Daniel the way that every other girl would love to react to a boy that rejects them. If you only watch a few minutes of this episode, just watch Vanessa say "Google me," because it was fantastic.

The overarching plot line is fun, but where will this go? The boy next door meets starlet story is not new (you can stream Notting Hill starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant on HBO Now). But, spinning this into a television show will require the writers to think about how this story or if this story can progress past that one note. I'm interested to see if the next few episodes can expand the plot and character development. But, until then, The Baker & The Beauty, didn't necessarily impress me. Fingers crossed for the future!

The Baker & The Beauty premiere's Monday nights at 10pm on ABC and available for streaming on Hulu.
