Motherland: Fort Salem TV Review

Freeform's newest drama follows three young witches. In this alternate version of America, witches are a part of the United States Army and are fighting against evil forces that are set out to destroy the human race. The show follows:

  • Raelle (Taylor Hickson): small town girl who used her powers to heal her neighbors. She's rough around the edges and in search of a little anarchy, especially when she meets Scylla (Amalia Holm) who may not be all that she seems.

  • Anacostia (Demetria McKinney): growing up in a more affluent family, she is a part of the lineage of the first Black woman to be a part of the army. Her family is expecting a lot of her and she's expecting a lot of herself...and her roommates.

  • Tally (Jessica Sutton): after growing up in an all female, cult-like setting, she's ready to prove herself. While giving everyone the benefit of the doubt, you learn early one that she is the peace-keeper of the trio.

This show has a great plot, very interesting to see the nation rely on young women to save them using powers as their weapons. But, everything else was not as strong. I want to be able to like this but it didn't keep my interest as I was hoping it would. It could be that the pilot had to set up a lot of exposition to set up. Unfortunately, I wasn't as impressed with it as I was with the trailer. I felt that the story seemed long winded and at times hard to follow. Fingers crossed the second episode gives a better impression of where this show is going.
