Amazon Prime has released the first season (for a limited time) of Showtime's Kidding, starring Jim Carrey. The show follows Jeff or Mr. Pickles (Carrey), a children's television persona. Pretty much think Mr. Rogers with longer hair. It follows him and his family, while they work through grief, difficulty, and change in their lives.
I went in not knowing the premise or much about it other than Jim Carrey was the star and Ariana Grande guest-starred in the second season. But, going in without expectation was a good thing. After seeing the first few episodes, I was intrigued. The angle of looking at the cracked lens of a seemingly perfect life is an exciting approach to a show about the life of a children's TV persona.
One of the amazing things about Jim Carrey is that he can really transform himself. You'll never see him as the same character twice. You can see the pain and innocence behind Carrey's Jeff. He always seems on the edge of a break and it keeps you slightly stressed as to when he might have the full break. While at first, I said to myself, "Huh...this is a little weird." I had grown, in just an episode and a half, to be fascinated by the characters and what they were going through.
I recommend watching Kidding, catch up if you have Showtime or watch the first season on Amazon Prime (it leaves the streaming platform on March 31st).
