Amazon Prime released their newest drama about Nazi hunters in the 1970s, called Hunters. It stars Logan Lerman and Al Pacino. And let me tell you, me having had the biggest crush on Logan Lerman after seeing Percy Jackson and The Olympians and Perks of Being a Wallflower, I was already excited to see the show.
Now I've only seen the first episode and it starts off with Jonah (Logan Lerman) a young Jewish man living with his grandmother. One night he wakes up startled by the sound of glass breaking and he creeps downstairs to see a man with a black hat and handkerchief over his face. The last thing he hears his grandmother say is "You can't hide." And the man shoots her. In seeking out the killer he becomes intertwined with Meyer (Al Pacino) who had worked with his grandmother to track down and kill Nazis living in American society. While Jonah's story plays out, you also follow a man named, Travis Leich (played by Greg Austin) who seems to be a fixer for the Nazi community and a Millie Morris, a detective just trying to figure out what the heck is going on.
The show is written really well, the characters have depth. But, this is not a show before bed, it is gruesome and extremely hard to watch. It's one of those shows that you ask yourself, "do I like this" as you cringe in your seat. But as always, shows like this aim to make you feel uncomfortable.
The show is also being criticized by the Auschwitz Memorial Museum, the show made fictional stories and fictional accounts of certain things happening in the camps to progress the story. And the Museum stated that these fictional accounts would give reason for there to be present and future Holocaust deniers. They tweeted:
"Auschwitz was full of horrible pain & suffering documented in the accounts of survivors. Inventing a fake game of human chess for @huntersonprime is not only dangerous foolishness & caricature. It also welcomes future deniers. We honor the victims by preserving factual accuracy."
You can read more about the situation here.
I'll let you make your own decisions about Hunters, the uncomfortable feeling and story line material are enough to make people not want to watch the show, but I think I'll give it another shot. Another shot because the story intrigues me? Potentially. Another shot because Logan Lerman is the star? Definitely. The crush continues.
