Everything's Gonna Be Okay: TV Review

Freeform released their newest comedy in January, Everything's Gonna Be Okay. It follows an Australian, Gay man named Nicholas (played by Josh Thomas). While on a trip to America to visit his dad and half sisters, his dad reveals that he is dying of cancer. Nicholas becomes the guardian of his teenage sisters Genevieve and Matilda.

Matilda (played by Kayla Cromer) is the oldest of the two and a high functioning Autistic teenager. She's applying to Julliard for college, following her blossoming sexuality, and often plays the mediator between Nicholas and Genevieve's sometimes tumultuous relationship. Genevieve (played by Maeve Press) is definitely the voice of reason most of the time, a protector (mostly of Matilda), and defiant in all the best ways. Nicholas,

Matilda, and Genevieve's dynamic is extremely entertaining and heartwarming to watch. All while Nicholas is raising his sisters, he is in the midst of a budding relationship with his boyfriend Alex (played by Adam Faison). Their relationship is real and relatable. Alex is easygoing and serves an anchor to Nicholas through all of this.

And Nicholas himself is vibrant, funny and exciting to watch. Every time he's onscreen it always invites a smile to your face. Watching him juggle being a brother, a father figure, and a boyfriend all at once is enticing and interesting. I'm excited to see a second season because I think it would be great to see this how the story progresses. The writing and the acting are well done and show the right side of a "slice of life" television show.

Currently the whole season is available on Hulu to stream, it's 30 minutes for each episode making it easy to devour in a few hours. I highly recommend watching this show.
