When I was in high school, Pretty Little Liars was THE show to watch. My friends and I would gossip about it at the lunch tables and come up with our own theories. I drifted from the show around season 4, it started to feel less fun and the story felt very forced. The show ended in 2017 after a jump forward in time, and we’d thought we’d seen the
last of PLL. Well...until Freeform coined The Perfectionists, a very short lived spin-off series following Allison DeLaurentis and Mona to their University jobs. The show was cancelled after one season and we’d thought we’d seen the last of the PLL franchise. Well...until this week when Riverdale’s showrunner, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, revealed a Pretty Little Liars reboot is in the works. Is the idea for a reboot original anymore? No. But, if it’s done right, it can work! Unfortunately, I don’t believe Pretty Little Liars deserves a revival...or at least not yet.
With the show ending 3 years ago and the spin-off starting and stopping last year, it doesn’t feel like we’re missing the franchise. The best part about a reboot is the long wait and surprise of it’s revival. For example, the everlasting 90s hit movie, Clueless, has a reboot coming to Peacock. But, the twist is it centers around Dion and Cher has gone missing. This plot brings you something completely different from the light and bouncy movie. Or you can reference the 90s movie Four Weddings and a Funeral. Mindy Kaling rebooted this rom-com into a series on Hulu. A modern day retelling coming almost 2 decades after the film.
We haven’t been waiting for PLL to come back, for now it feels like the story of A is closed. I’m very interested to see what ideas they have for a reboot of Pretty Little Liars, but I feel like our media and entertainment is craving new and exciting stories, the desire for reboots isn’t as strong as it used to be.
