A Breath of Fresh Air...in Space: Away Review

In Netflix’s new drama, Away, Hilary Swank plays Emma Green. She is an American astronaut about to embark on a risky expedition to Mars with an international team of astronauts. Emma must find the balance between being the commander of this expedition and being a mother, missing her husband and daughter. Throughout the season you see Emma struggle to balance these different areas of her life. Making things more difficult are the mistrust some teammates have in her and the ailments her husband takes on after she leaves.

Away, carries something special, it feels like you’re watching a mini-movie each episode. The story is written in a way that you feel attached to each character. The episodes are built to explore each crew member as well as how Emma is able to interact with each person. Mark Ivanir who plays Misha, the Russian astronaut on the crew, is a great actor and character. He challenges Emma and makes her think, while being able to bring some great comedic timing to each episode.

Her husband and daughter played by Josh Charles and Talitha Eliana Bateman, respectively, keep the show grounded. Showing how they are holding things down emotionally and physically at home, display the sacrifice everyone makes when a family member goes to space. Talitha is definitely a stand out for me, as a young actress she’s bringing a lot of great emotion to the role and her scenes with Josh Charles are always ones to watch.

I’m surprised there are not more television shows about space, Away feels new. Like a breath of fresh air in a world overrun by cop and hospital dramas.

You can stream Away now on Netflix.
