Today on Friday the 13th, Niall Horan dropped his sophomore album Heartbreak Weather. This comes after his 2017 debut solo album Flicker. I have listened to the album twice already this morning and I have one thing to say...Niall, who hurt you?
In all seriousness, Niall's sophomore follow up is a great follow-up! The three singles he started dropping at the end of 2019: "Nice to Meet Ya", "Put a Little Love on Me", and "No Judgement" all made more sense as they were playing on the album. When Niall dropped his first single of the album ("Nice to Meet Ya") I was thrown off by the tone. Flicker had a chill, John Mayer-esque tone to it. So hearing something with a little more of a rock edge almost startled me. But, the tone all made sense when I listened to the album in full. Niall's new work has a little more of a produced and upbeat feel. Which was refreshing and exciting to hear from Niall. It's always great to see an artist extend and push themselves to the next level of work. It shows he's okay with branching out and is willing try something new.
One of Niall's biggest strengths (besides his raspy voice and great musical instrumental skills) is his songwriting. Niall is great at giving a mini story inside of a song, and the whole album feels like a story of love, loss, and the heartbreak that comes with it. I highly recommend streaming Heartbreak Weather today, it'll be a nice way to ring in your weekend.
