Us: Review

Have you ever been scared of your own reflection? Well, Jordan Peele's newest movie, Us, will make sure you never want to look into a mirror again. His latest installment follows the Wilson family on a vacation to Santa Cruz. Their nice summer getaway is interrupted but some not-so-friendly intruders. But, they do share some common ground with these red jumpsuit fiends...they look exactly the same. Each family member has a creepy looking doppelgänger. Unfortunately for the Wilsons, instead of relaxing on vacation, they are fighting for their lives.

And the movie stars some Black Panther alum you'll recognize: Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke who play Adelaide and Gabe Wilson. Winston Duke gave a great performance as a sweet and dorky dad compared to his strong willed and intimidating M'Baku in Black Panther. He was a great source of comic relief when the tension in the movie was strong. He definitely helped me breath when I was holding my breath. Lupita Nyong'o deserves an award for her work as two strong leading characters, Adelaide and her "tether" Red. The ability to show vulnerability and strength in both characters sometimes you couldn't tell who you were rooting for.

Jordan Peele wrote, and directed Us just like his 2017 brain child and debut Get Out. Peele continues to impress. Us was equal parts stressful and creepy. These horror films he's creating aren't of a usual formula. That formula being a creature or outlandish type of monster stalk it's prey and pop out causing audiences to continuously scream. Not with Jordan Peele, his monsters are based on something a lot more close to home. Get Out the monster was racism and with Us the monster is...well...us. He creates such fascinating characters and stories that spark every part of your brain to do the work and pay attention. It was easier to follow the meaning of Get Out when the movie came out and with Us it's a little less on the nose. I'm not proud to say my friends and I had to Google the meaning behind the film, but it all makes sense. You walk away with questions when you leave the theatre but at random points you mind with make a connection and then the movie will make even more sense. I will say if Us came out first I think it would've had a bigger impact on audiences. Get Out carried such a strong impact with audiences that Us almost seems like a weaker follow up. But, Us standing alone, is a good film that will have you jumping at the sight of you own reflection.

It is a must watch movie and definitely a must watch before the internet starts leaking spoilers! I definitely recommend and I would give it an 8/10.
