There's A Lot of Soul in Disney's Soul

Welp...Pixar has done it again. And that’s all I’ll say.

Okay, I’ll say more, but I can’t say too much because there is a lot that can be given away. And I am not trying to give you any spoilers.

Pixar’s Soul follows middle school music teacher Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx). He has finally started to break into the jazz music industry. He’s riding high and ready to follow his dreams...until an accident throws a wrench in his plans. Joe’s soul is determined to get back to his body. While trying to find his way home, he teams up with an unborn soul (voiced by Tina Fey) who isn’t ready to live on earth just yet.

This movie brings a tear to your eye while giving your kids something beautiful to smile at. It’s animated to perfection, even the way they portray the hair and the sunlight, is astonishing. It was also incredible to watch a Pixar movie that featured and normalized having Black people and showing the diversity of New York City. The story talked about the contributions the Black community made to Jazz and you don’t see a lot of films, let alone animated films carrying out a message that made an often unreached audience feel seen.

This Pixar movie makes history with it’s first Black director in Pixar’s 34 year history. Kemp Powers, known for his writing on One Night in Miami and Star Trek: Discovery, gets his first directing credit by co-directing and writing Soul.

This movie has so much heart and well….soul. You can stream Soul now on Disney+.
