An Unexpected Road Trip with a Delightful Turn: Unpregnant Movie Review

17-year-old, Veronica has everything figured out. On track for the best colleges, perfect boyfriend, popular friends, and great skin (a personal observation). But, her life plan is derailed when she takes a pregnancy test at school. It’s positive. Too scared to tell her friends and family, Veronica enlists her ex-best friend, Bailey, to drive her all the way from Missouri to Arizona to get an abortion. And it is definitely not a smooth sailing road trip, there are a lot of bumps along the way and hopefully the repairing of a friendship.

HBO Max’s new comedy, Unpregnant, is delightfully fun and serious at the same time. This movie created a dialogue about abortion and about what young women have to go through to get this procedure done. While I’m not here to tell you how to feel about abortion, this movie does give a great perspective of the situation. We’ve all met women like Veronica, and even if you don’t think you have, you’ve probably met someone who has had an abortion. Unpregnant allows you to digest the serious information in a sweet and funny package. You feel like you’re watching friends, and it felt relatable.

Veronica was played by Haley Lu Richardson and Bailey is played by Barbie Ferreira. Their friend chemistry was prominent. If you told me these girls grew up together, I’d 100% believe you. The nature of Veronica and Bailey’s friendship was endearing. You can easily name a friend like Veronica or Bailey. Each of them have their own personal journeys throughout the movie and the character development throughout was spot-on.

I’d love to see Barbie and Haley together in a movie again, but for now I’ll just keep rewatching Unpregnant. Grab some popcorn and your best friend, Unpregnant is the perfect movie night. You can stream it now on HBO Max.
