Unicorn Store: Review

Brie Larson's directorial debut is out on Netflix and it's called Unicorn Store, the movie follows Kit (played by Brie Larson), who has failed out of art school and now is trying to find her place in a world that doesn't want her colorful personality to shine. While working as a temp Kit receives a letter to come to the store and the salesman (played by Captain Marvel costar, Samuel L. Jackson). The salesman offers Kit the opportunity to get a unicorn. The movie shows Kit navigating through adulthood, trying her hardest to prove that she is an adult and deserves this unicorn.

I have to say the preview did not make the movie look super appealing to me. But, I love Brie Larson and had faith in her so I decided to watch the movie anyway. And I'm glad I did! It was a great representation of a you twenty-something trying to live in adulthood. Kit feels like she's failing at everything and she can't be herself and that is how so many young adults feel today, myself included! It was great to watch Brie Larson play such a magical and relatable character.

Her supporting characters definitely did not go unnoticed. Mamoudou Athie played Virgil, the handyman Kit recruits to help build a stable for the unicorn. His chemistry with Larson was wonderful and the relationship was very sweet! And you may recognize Kit's parents, they're played by Joan Cusack and Bradley Whitford. They were funny and a good caricature of typical parents trying to encourage their children in post-graduate life.

I would recommend Unicorn Store, especially for the millennials that are still trying to find their place and figure out what it means to be an adult. I would give this movie a 8.5/10.
