With the 2020 Oscars race behind us, we look ahead to see what films will be nominated for the awards in 2021. But, we have to ask, will we see change in 2021?
It's no surprise that the Oscars this year were not diverse...like at all. All of the supporting actor/actress nominees were white. Antonio Banderas and Cynthia Erivo were the only nominees of color in the best actor/actress category. And Parasite (still so happy) brought home the big prizes being the only film of color to be nominated for best picture. In years past, it seems as if every other year is the year for a diverse round of nominees.
But, with Parasite making history by being the first international film to win best picture will this change the way we go about the Oscars in years to come? I had asked that question when the movie Black Panther came out. The first superhero film to be nominated for best picture. I thought that a movie with such cultural impact would be able to change the way we look at film. But, it didn't. I believe the movies that should be represented at the Oscars are movies that we've never seen before, movies through a different lens. And Parasite does that.
I'll be keeping an eye out on what movies could make waves in the 2021 race. But, obviously I'm not in the Academy so I don't make the final decisions. I just hope that they are able to see what films are bringing a different point of view, cultural impact, and representation to the film industry.
