Shazam!: Movie Review

SHAZAM!

Have you seen the latest DC Comic's movie? No?! Well you need to. Shazam! came out April 5th and followed the story of Billy Baston (played by Disney Channel's Asher Angel), who is a streetwise foster child who is searching for his biological mom. When Billy runs away from his latest foster home, he is placed in a group home with two loving adults and five other foster children. After defending his new foster brother, Freddy (played by It's Jack Dylan Grazer), he escapes the bullies on the subway. But, instead of riding the subway home he ends up in an underground cave and is bestowed with superhero powers.

Thus the transformation into Shazam begins, when Billy shouts that word he turns from a 14 year old to the hunky and super funny Zachary Levi (yes, I was fan-girling A LOT). With Freddy's knowledge of superheroes, he and Billy navigate the new world of Shazam. But, things aren't so easy when they run into Dr. Sivana (played by Mark Strong), he is ready to take Shazam on and he's not backing down.

I have to start off by saying Zachary Levi nailed this role. He really made the movie even more special. The comedic timing was great and it was fun to see the superhero fans become the superheroes of the film. The idea of a superhero movie can be daunting to some people (no me, I'm obsessed with them), but Shazam! isn't just about the origin of a superhero, its about family. The growing relationship between Billy and his new foster family is a highlight of the film. The friendship that Billy and Freddy have is not only funny, but very sweet.

Let's just talk about Mark Strong for a second. If there is one thing I love in a superhero film it is a fully fledged villain. A villain that you can see the beginning and end of their journey. Mark Strong's performance as Dr. Sivana was one of my favorite villain performances. The character was strong and also so evil that he didn't care who he hurt. It was interesting because at certain points you could almost relate to him. And that is what a good villain should be, it should be someone you relate to and can see how someone made the choice to go bad.

I definitely recommend seeing Shazam! it's a great escape from reality and a great time to watch. I would give it 10/10!
