Sometimes you want the easy rom-com. Where they meet, they fall in love, the movie ends. But, sometimes you want something a little more than that. For you next movie night, I have a couple options for movies with some interesting and unconventional love stories.
Isn’t it Romantic: This 2019 film features Rebel Wilson as Natalie, someone who hates love and hates rom-coms even more finds herself stuck in one when she hits her head in the subway. Desperate to find a way out through all the singing, extreme romantic gestures and perfect hair flips from Priyanka Chopra, Natalie is wondering if she’ll have to say in a romantic comedy forever. The New Romantic: Some college kids work in the dining hall or mail room to make some extra cash. Others become a sugar baby! Follow an aspiring writer named, Blake played by The End of the F***ing World’s Jessica Barden, as she writes about her experience being a sugar baby in her senior year of college. Stream on Netflix.
Someone Great: Ever think you’d see a rom-com that starts with the end of a relationship? Well, in Someone Great you get to follow Jenny (Gina Rodriguez) as she relives her recently ended relationship in flashbacks. In an effort to cheer her up, her best friends Blair and Erin take her on one last epic jaunt around NYC before she moves to San Francisco. Stream on Netflix.
The Sun is also a Star: Can you fall in love with someone in just one day? Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton’s characters Natasha and Daniel test this theory. From Nicola Yoon’s novel of the same name, these teens face the hope for love under a time crunch because Natasha’s family is getting deported...the next day. Stream on HBO Now.
