It's October and Oscar buzz is already making its way through the theaters of America. One notable buzz is coming from a movie that tells the true story of a group of strippers and that start to drug their clientele to get more money. And the supporting actress that is on the receiving end of this buzz...Jenny from the Block herself, Jennifer Lopez.
The story of Hustlers follows the interview of Destiny, one of the strippers in the heist, played by Constance Wu. The interview is for an article written by a journalist named Elizabeth (played by Julia Stiles). We see the story through Destiny's eyes, every relationship, strip club pole dance, and drug cooking session. But the story not only centers around the excitement of their plan, but it also creates a wonderful story of friendship. The friendship and sisterhood that these women create is something that ties this movie together like shoelaces.
The cast of this movie is pretty much everything you'd ever want. Hollywood heavy-hitters like Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu. Musical muses like Cardi B and Lizzo. And fun, familiar faces like Lili Reinhart and Keke Palmer. Each woman brought something new and wonderful to the table. Two stand outs for me were Reinhart and Palmer, their supporting roles added extra fun and humor to the bunch. It can be hard to shine whilst on-screen with people that have big star power but they really held their own. A lot of the good laughs come from the two of them.
Constance Wu was technically the main character of the movie, but she wasn't a shining presence. The acting was good but no more than that. The true emotion and excitement came from Jennifer Lopez. You would forget that the story wasn't centered around her point of view because she was so incredible to watch. I've seen a lot of Lopez's movies and her acting wasn't that great. I'm a huge Maid in Manhattan fan, but I know the acting isn't impeccable. But, between her last big screen performance and now...Lopez had some masterclasses in acting (and pole dancing) that blew me away! She has so much energy, emotion, and love behind her character. She was truly a pleasure to watch.
Hustlers is fun trip to the theater. You get a great mix of drama, humor, and women empowerment to make you walk out of the movie theater feeling strong. I highly recommend seeing this movie, especially while Jennifer Lopez is campaigning for that Oscar!
