Cole Sprouse is back on the big screen! The book turned movie, Five Feet Apart, has hit theatres. The story follows Stella (Haley Lu Richardson), a teenager living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). She meets Will (Cole Sprouse) who also has CF with a rare bacteria that has infected his lungs further. Stella and Will team up and start to do their treatments together. Even though they cannot touch each other and need to stand at least six feet apart, they end up falling in love.
Let me preface this by saying, I did not read the book. But, seeing the movie was not the greatest experience I have to say. I wanted to like this movie, I really did! I love Cole, I think Haley is a good actress, and I was excited to see Justin Baldoni's directorial skills shine. But, I am not a big fan of sick child love stories. I don't think it is romantic to sacrifice your own health for love. Maybe I'm wrong but I think it is a good message to send. The acting was not awful but Cole Sprouse played will the same as he plays Jughead Jones from Riverdale. The characters have a similar bruiting attitude but the characters felt way too similar. The climax of the movie (don't worry I won't get any spoilers) gave a lot of cringeworthy moments and at some points did not make much sense.
What I do appreciate about this movie is that it brings awareness to the Cystic Fibrosis community. The movie really explains the different aspects of CF and how it effects their everyday lives. I walked away from the theatre learning something entirely new. But, I also walked away from the theatre feeling less than enthusiastic about Five Feet Apart. You might end up crying, I definitely didn't. But, enter this movie at your own risk. I would give it a 5/10.
