Opening weekend for Captain Marvel has officially come to a close, they earned $153M in the US and $455M globally. Which makes Captain Marvel the 7th biggest movie in the Marvel franchise. It opened March 9th on International Women's Day and I celebrated the only way I knew how...by seeing Captain Marvel in theaters.
Captain Marvel follows the story of Carol Danvers an Air Force pilot that for some unforeseen circumstances is living her life on the planet Kree where she is known by the name Vers. After a mission goes awry with an alien race called Skrulls (who have the ability to shapeshift). Vers makes a (literal) crash landing on planet Earth. And to make your nostalgia run wild, she landed inside a Blockbuster! May they rest in peace. While trying to get her bearings on Earth, she teams up with a young (and impressively digitally enhanced) Nick Fury. This is the beginning of his extraterrestrial and super-human experience. And you get to see what happens to Nick Fury's eye! Through twists, shapeshifting, tearful reunions, and the nostalgic 90s references Danvers and Fury try to save the day and learn just how powerful Carol Danvers...Captain Marvel really is.
Captain Marvel received mixed reviews but I loved it. I thought it was fun and really helped lay some ground work for what we know about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Seeing more of Nick Fury was very interesting, we were able to dive into his personality for the first time in the franchise. It was incredibly endearing to see Carol and Nick's friendship progress. It also made sense why he would page her at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Brie Larson played Captain Marvel extremely well, I thought the character was fun, strong, and totally badass! I would definitely recommend seeing Captain Marvel whether you are a Marvel fan or not. I give it an 8/10!
